When Should You Schedule Newborn Photos? (Hint: It’s Not What You Think)

If you’ve been Googling (or asking ChatGPT) “when to schedule newborn photos,” chances are you’ve come across the 5–10 day window that most photographers recommend.

But here’s the truth: that timeline doesn’t work for every family—and it doesn’t have to.

As a lifestyle newborn photographer in Nashville, I’ve found that the sweet spot for truly meaningful photos is actually a little later. Some of my favorite sessions happen when babies are 5–7 weeks old.

Why I Love Older Newborn Sessions

First of all—older babies are just more expressive. Around 5–7 weeks, your baby starts making eye contact, showing their first smiles, and responding to your voice. They still feel teeny and new, but they’re already showing signs of personality—and those moments are gold in photos.

They’re also more comfortable in their bodies. That curled-up sleepy newborn phase is beautiful, but it’s short-lived—and honestly, it’s not a requirement for a great photo session.

The Beauty of Lifestyle Photography: Flexibility

My approach is baby-led and relaxed. We don’t need your baby to sleep through the whole session or pose a certain way. We focus on connection—tiny toes in your hands, a snuggle in the nursery rocker, your baby stretching in a sunbeam.

Because we’re not trying to mold your baby into a pose, timing becomes way more flexible. You have time to settle in at home, get to know your baby, and find your rhythm before inviting me in.

What If My Baby Is Already a Few Weeks Old?

Perfect. Let’s document them as they are now.

There’s no “too late” when it comes to telling your family’s story. Whether they’re six days or six weeks old, your baby is changing every day—and I promise you’ll want to remember all of it.

When Should You Book?

While we don’t have to shoot in the first two weeks, I do recommend booking during your second or early third trimester. I only take a limited number of newborn sessions each month so I can stay flexible with timing once baby arrives.
