How to Prepare Your Home for an In-Home Newborn Photography Session in Nashville

Bringing a newborn home is a whirlwind—feeding schedules, diaper changes, sleepless nights—and in the middle of it all, you’ve booked your in-home newborn photography session in Nashville. The good news? You don’t need a magazine-ready house for gorgeous photos.

I specialize in lifestyle newborn photography, which means I’m capturing your family’s love and connection—not perfection. Whether this is your first baby or you’re juggling older siblings too, these tips will help you feel prepared, confident, and excited for your session day.

1. Focus on a Few Key Spaces for Your Lifestyle Newborn Session

I’ll photograph where your family feels most at home—often the nursery, living room, or master bedroom. You don’t need to clean your whole house—just tidy the spaces we’ll use.

2. Let the Light In (but Don’t Worry About Dark Rooms)

Before I arrive, open blinds and curtains in the main rooms so natural light can fill the space. Soft daylight creates that warm, airy look you see in my Nashville newborn photography galleries.

And if certain rooms are darker or the weather isn’t cooperating—don’t worry! I bring professional lighting equipment to gently enhance the light so your photos still have that natural, flattering feel.

3. Create a Calm Atmosphere

Soft music, a white noise machine, or simply turning off the TV can help the whole family (baby included!) relax during the session. A peaceful vibe makes for sweeter, more natural photos.

4. Set the Thermostat for YOUR Comfort

Many newborn photographers will ask you to heat your home to 78 degrees, which may keep your newborn sleepy- but it will make a postpartum mama sweat. I recommend turning off all fans and bumping your home a few degrees to keep baby cozy, but don’t feel pressured to turn your home into a sauna!

5. Prep an Outdoor Spot

If the weather’s nice, I love to step outside for a few photos—especially in front of your home so your baby has a picture of the place they were first brought to. It’s such a special keepsake for the future. If you have older kids, this can also be a relaxed way to capture everyone together—maybe playing in the yard,or snuggling on the porch.

6. Dress for Comfort

Most of the time, I suggest swaddling your newborn—it’s both adorable and keeps their hands from covering their sweet little face. I also recommend having one tighter, stretchy outfit ready for variety. We’ll keep it simple so the focus stays on your baby. While soft, neutral tones photograph beautifully, I don’t believe everyone needs to stick to beige. Wear colors and styles that make you feel good and compliment your home decor. For moms, that might mean a flowy dress, a cozy sweater, or your favorite jeans—Comfort and confidence are the real key here.

7. Feed Baby Before the Session

A full belly often means a happy, relaxed baby. Try to feed your newborn about 15–30 minutes before I arrive so we can start with a content little one. If you would like nursing photos be sure to let me know!

8. Include Sentimental Details in Your Newborn Photos

Have a special blanket, heirloom outfit, or handmade toy? I love weaving these personal touches into your at-home newborn photography session—they tell your unique story.

9. Relax and Go With the Flow

Babies run the show, and that’s okay. We’ll take breaks for feeding, changing, or soothing whenever needed. Some of the sweetest images happen in those in-between moments.

10. Remember—You Don’t Need Perfection

Your home is a place of love, not a showroom. The goal isn’t to make it spotless—it’s to make memories you’ll treasure forever.
