Best Places to Take Newborn Photos at Home

As a newborn photographer of nearly 10 years, I’ve learned which locations in your home work best for taking you new baby’s photos. I thought I’d do a quick round up of the most popular photo spots for at home baby portraits-

Rocking chair cuddles- My favorite place to capture you and your baby together, cuddling in a rocking chair gives timeless images that capture your connection. Both parents can have a turn snuggling their baby. This is also a comfortable place for skin to skin bonding or if baby needs a nursing break.

Baby in their crib- If you have a nursery set up, these can be some of the sweetest photos! At just a few weeks old, this may even be the first time your baby has used their crib ;) This is a great spot to focus on details- up close photos of hands, toes, belly buttons and those cute baby thighs!

On your bed- Bedrooms with windows on the side walls next to the bed have great lighting for photos. The bed is a cozy spot for the whole family to cuddle up together and makes for a safe place if an older siblings wants a chance to hold the baby against the pillows. I always love taking a few solo shots of baby on the bed because the scale really highlights how tiny they are when you first bring them home!

In front of your home- How special would it be to have a photo of yourself as a baby, with your parents in front of your very first home. I like to think about your baby’s perspective when I’m photographing their newborn session and the photos they will find most important in the future.

Living room- Chances are, aside from being in bed, you’ll spend a lot of your time hanging on the couch the first weeks after bringing baby home (ok, ok, if you have a toddler running around this may not be quite as true!). Most living rooms have pretty nice window light and make for relaxed family photos.

Please know that every session is different and this is not a definitive list. Some homes may not get much light in the living room, or you may have decided to forgo a nursery (my daughter never ended up using hers!). When I come to your home I’ll get a quick tour and we’ll take photos in the places with best light. If you’re looking for a newborn photographer, I’d love to chat with you more!
